What is not to love about waffles? They are tasty, fun, and very versatile with flavors and toppings. They are typically hard to make during the week though with work or a very busy schedule. That is why I decided to make these buttermilk waffles that only require 5 ingredients so that you CAN make them during the week!
These waffles are soft with a beautifully browned and crisp top. The flavor is buttery combined with the delicious flavor of buttermilk. They are unsweetened which makes them perfect for sweet or savory waffles, depending on the toppings you choose. Only one bowl is needed to make these and with mixing and cooking, you’ll have yourself a waffle in about 10-12 minutes! They also store great in the refrigerator for a super easy breakfast the following days.

Ingredients You Will Need

Can these waffles be made dairy free?
Absolutely! A plant-based milk with about 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice can be used instead of buttermilk. However, the batter might be a bit more runny with this substitute. Additionally, the butter can also be substituted with avocado oil.

How to Make Buttermilk Waffles
First, start with melting the butter and setting it aside to cool.
Second, lightly beat an egg in a medium sized bowl. Next, stir in the buttermilk and melted butter until well mixed. Note: if the butter is too hot still, it might start to harden when mixed with the cold buttermilk.
Now pour in the flour and baking soda, stirring until no clumps remain and the batter is nice and smooth. Worthy of noting is that the batter will be thick in texture.

Finally, heat a waffle iron to medium-high temperature (if there is a manual setting) and wait until it notifies you that it is ready. Then spoon out 1/4 of the batter onto the middle of the iron. Now close it and let it cook for about 3 minutes or until it signals it is ready. Last but not least, repeat these steps until all the batter is used. Lastly, add your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Storage Notes and Tips
- These waffles can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 3 days for best results
- The batch can be doubled in size for a total of 8 waffles
