Creamy Chai Tea

Have you ever tried making chai tea from scratch? If not, it’s super simple! This rainy, cold weather has been making me want to have more than the usual amount of hot drinks. Besides the typical coffee and herbal teas, it is also nice to have a special drink. Oftentimes, a special drink out means spending $7 or $8 on a cup. That can add up really quickly! So why not save yourself some money and take a few minutes to make this creamy chai tea?

This creamy chai tea is naturally sweetened with honey and it is dairy free. It is silky smooth with a wonderful balance of spice and sweetness. This is different from the typical American chai tea latte. I love the flavor of cardamom which stands out in this tea. This creamy chai tea reminds me so much of the very delicious chai that an Indian woman made for me. There was a language barrier so I never was able to get her recipe, but I wanted to try and make something that resembled hers. So this is my spin on her drink which definitely hits the spot!

How to Make Creamy Chai Tea

1. Steep 3 black tea bags in 1 1/2 cups of hot water for 8 minutes. Remove the tea bags.

2. In a medium sized saucepan, add the heavy cream, milk, honey, spices, and freshly brewed black tea.

3. Heat the saucepan over medium high on the stove, while using a metal whisk to mix the ingredients. Bring it to a light boil, takes about 5 minutes.

4. Whisk the chai before serving it into mugs or tea cups.

Storage Tips and Notes

  • If dairy is not an issue, you can substitute the dairy free heavy cream with regular heavy cream
  • If there is any leftover chai, store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator and reheat before using
  • This recipe can be doubled if more servings are desired
